History: Ruby History and Red History
Personality:
To adequately describe Ruby, we have to look at two entirely different points in time, as with most characters in the Once Upon a Time fandom. There’s the fairy-tale version, Red Riding Hood, and the cursed, Storybrooke version, Ruby Lucas. Taken separately, these two versions of the same person come off as two very different people, and to understand the character’s post-curse self, it’s important to look as the previous two.
When we first meet Red, she’s a young, naïve, kind, and spirited young woman who feels as if she’s being held captive in her own home. She’s deeply in love with a young man, whom her grandmother doesn’t want her to see, and she’s forced to wear a red cloak and stay in the house after dark, especially during the wolf’s time. She’s told that she needs to be protected from a killer wolf from the forest, but she’s more interested in helping save the village and run away with her love than continue to be cooped up inside where it’s safe.
Her bravery is apparent, though this is also an example of how naïve she is to think that it would be a simple thing to track down and kill the wolf so that she could live her dream. Instead, everything is shattered first when she believes her boyfriend to be the wolf, only to eventually realize that the wolf was really herself all along. In a terrible turn of events, she eats her boyfriend, and is forced to run away from the angry villagers.
To say that Red spends a good deal of time devastated by this is an understatement. She is terrified of herself and what she might do, believing herself a monster that should not be accepted. Snow White proves to be her true friend, accepting her for who she is, though she cannot do so herself for a long time.
Not until she eventually learns to control her wolf form does she truly gain back any confidence. After this, she learns to enjoy her wolf’s time, running through the forest without fear of hurting others, and enjoying the night. She is shown using her abilities to help her friends, her bravery returning. She’s in a good place beside the Charming’s, though Regina’s curse brings that all to an end.
Red becomes Ruby Lucas in Storybrooke, an incredibly rebellious young woman who is scolded by her grandmother for staying out too late at night and constantly complains about having to open the diner. She wears heavy makeup and skimpy outfits, flirts with any boy she finds cute, and carries around a ‘I don’t care’ attitude. In reality, Ruby is a rather unconfident person who dreams of leaving town but isn’t sure she won’t just mess it up at the first opportunity. She often switches gears between being determined and motivated to doubting every decision she makes or action she attempts.
After Emma arrives, Ruby finds herself helping her in ways she doesn’t understand, due to her wolf-like senses, but she finds purpose in being able to help, eventually accepting that Storybrooke is where she wants to be because of the people she loves, leading her down the path of becoming someone closer to the person she was before the curse hit, the curse which is then broken by Emma.
Ruby is now a combination of both people, as her memories of the Enchanted Forest are returned to her. When the curse is broken, Ruby is again unsure, as it’s been decades since she last turned and no longer believes she’ll remember how to control it, yet she’s confident and helpful and believes in her friends, who aren’t exactly the same as they used to be either. Though she relies on Mary Margaret and David to lead them as they did back in the Enchanted Forest, they confide in her as one of their oldest friends, and she can snap them out of moods as well.
Though kindhearted and ‘one of the good guys,’ Ruby feels she has a lot to make up for because of all the death and destruction she’s caused in the past, the vast majority of which she doesn’t even remember. She has a lot of guilt and sometimes very dark thoughts which she tries her best to hide.
She’s still sorting out exactly who she is now that everything is said and done, but Ruby is first and foremost a good and loyal friend, and so long as she remains true to that, she knows her path is set. Reclaiming who she is and acknowledging her fears in regards to being a Child of the Moon is secondary, which will likely come back to bite her in the ass when she can no longer avoid it.
Powers/Abilities:
Ruby is a werewolf, and changes into a wolf during wolf’s time, or the three days around the full moon each month. Her transformation to a wolf is a complete one, not a human/wolf hybrid, though the wolf is very large and faster/stronger than a regular wolf.
Even when not in wolf form, Ruby has access to abilities. Her senses are enhances, especially her sense of smell which is incredibly powerful an accurate. She also has enhanced strength and speed.

A burst of energy, and then they all came flooding back. Memories, tangled in a bright web, bursting inside her mind like fireworks. She tried to sort through them, the sensation almost blinding. Good memories, bad memories, ugly memories, but all hers, ones that had been locked away by powerful magic.
But they were hers again. She remembered Peter, and the agony of his loss. She remembered meeting Snow White, her truest friend, and all the moments that they stood by one another. She remembered the first night she remembered her wolf’s time, the way the forest floor had felt under her feet and the wind in her fur.
Some of these memories she’d missed, others not so much, and at first she didn’t know whether she should be thankful or not to have them all back.
She didn’t have time to dwell on it too long, though, as the sky began to darken and an enormous purple cloud loomed overheard, pushing itself through the streets of Storybrooke, engulfing everything in it’s path.
The ominous sight caused fear to begin to bloom in Ruby’s chest. With the curse broken and time moving forward again, would that mean the return of the wolf as well? She had no idea where her cloak might be, and so much time had passed that she had no idea if she could still control herself the way she used to.
She exhaled, shaking off the thoughts. For now, she had other things to do. She knew who she was, who her friends were, and they hadn’t seen each other in a very long time. Not the way they were supposed to. It was time to fix that.
Smoke or no smoke, Ruby moved out into the street, and began to walk. It was time for a reunion, on that had been a long time coming.
